During a recent vote in Congress, Republicans removed protections from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the most used wilderness area in the country with over 1,175 lakes and interconnected waterways spread across 1.1 million acres in northern Minnesota.
Thank you for posting this important information. The boundary waters canoe area was crucial in my childhood, and influenced my father's future work to protect waterways and local parks. I will restack and repost. Please keep me posted!
Thanks Bryan for the well articulated, researched article. And those pictures of yours as stunning. Thanks for all you do for the environment and Minnesota.
ELECTED OFFICIALS letting a foreign country poison the waters of a wilderness area that planes can’t even fly over, then that company sells the raw material to China, then China processes the copper and sells it back to the United States. How the hell does that make any sense?
Thank you so much for using your platform and message to inform and encourage others to join in the fight to protect the BWCA. Your incredibly beautiful photos are a testament to the beauty, awe, and peace in this sacred space. This Minnesotan is beyond grateful to all who are working so hard to stop the madness of this short-sighted (and greedy) decision.
Thank you for informing us about this atrocity. It must be litigated. Every single Republican in office should be barred from ever serving in a public capacity again.
This is the best article I have read on the issue. Thank you so much. I sent this to family members in MN and IL. I wonder if you could be a guest speaker on Heather Cox Richardson's podcasts to share this information.
My little mind exploded when I heard about this vote last week…not much press as you can imagine. This isn’t about money although someone will be making it if this goes through. It feels most like a personal retribution from the president directed at the entire state of Minnesota which has clearly made its opinion of trump well known. The bar on what this guy will do to piss off people and further destroy an environment he will NEVER bother to go see, let alone have the ability to really appreciate and understand, falls lower every day. In fact, there is no bar anymore.
Thanks for reporting and also including two organizations we can support in defense of the Boundary Waters.
"I think that it’s important for outdoor photography to testify, and be used as a prophet to help protect what we have, and if what we have is lost, to show the future what was taken away from them and who did it. As Toni Morrison said, all art is political, and to pretend otherwise is to defend the status quo. I hope that you will start to see your photography in the same way."
Yes, this so very much. Thank you Bryan for speaking up to protect the BW, with your words and your photographs! We as photographers need to keep at it even when we feel no one is looking or listening. (In my case anyway)
Here in Michigan I feel like I'm the only photographer speaking out, The Porcupine Mountains and fighting the copperwood mine. I don't get it. The others use these parks for their photography and run their workshops. Yet they are silent on the destruction of of our public lands. Will they loose followers, yes. Will they loose sales, yes. Are we loosing the battle with our public lands right now, yes. Thats why we need to speak up, loudly and often. We don't want to loose these places forever.
This administration is the worst ever. They don’t know the meaning of the word boundary—-in any sense of the word. Even when stopped by the courts, they keep going. I am a firm believer that God has a plan for all of them and their day will come. We can only hope that the natural beauty of our country still remains.
Thank you. I hate that the Republicans have done this and that an area I love (but don't even visit enough) is being threatened by rapacious and short sided greed. I applaud and thank you for your advocacy
Thanks, Bryan, for your efforts to protect the Boundary Waters. Ruth Conniff published this piece in The Progressive on July 7th: https://progressive.org/magazine/fighting-the-forces-of-greed-and-destruction-conniff-20260707/
