Photos of the northland during early winter. Sub-zero mornings, sea smoke, and ice. It’s why early winter is one of my favorite times to photograph Lake Superior.
I love finding other winter lovers on substack. The photos are always magical and the ode to the cold is one of my favorite things to read.
Also really cool notes on how to edit a colder scene to help the subject stand out. I'd never really thought of leaning into the blue on an all white photo before, but duh!
Really miss living in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin, and your photos take me right back there. Love it!
I absolutely Love your Winter photos! Still recovering from a broken ankle, so I'm pretty cautious around the ice.... won't be long and I l'll be out and about up there.... Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to you and your family!!!!
I'm sure there are people who like that composition, cutting out the water and putting the sunset/ rise behind the bush. Wish I could be there to see it for myself and try different compositions. I'll have to see what I can come up with here in eastern Montana. Thanks for responding.
Oh and your spectacular Calendar previews are extraordinarily aMazing!!! WOW! The photos you capture from our Northern shores in these frigid temps really capture the beauty of nature in the exact moment ... but I still can't believe this is your favorite time because it seems from other photos of yours that no matter the season, you are extremely good at your photography & as you explained in this newsletter how to enhance. Simply you are gifted and share a magical view in every photo. Thank you so much, Bryan! (and for bearing this bitter cold to take these photos!)
Too soon and too frigidly cold for me! {on to read your thoughts but officially Winter begins December 21st (lol) the Winter solstice, although it seems like December 1st is what they’re marking meteorologically} Another breath taking view from your lens to our eyes! Thank you!
Wow.
beautiful image.
Great set of images, Bryan! Love the winter, as well. We are lucky to live in areas that feature amazing winter conditions.
Spectacular photos!

As always, your photos stir a combination of joy and longing in my heart. Every single one! Thanks for posting these, Brian!
Thes all look wonderful. In the second from the top, I just wonder how it would look with getting a little lower behind the frozen bush.
I didn't care for that composition because I wanted the water to be visible. But, I'm sure there are people who would have loved it.

Stunning simplicity
Awesome photos
Thanks for the beautiful photos, Bryan. I have been away from the Big Lake too long …
Beautiful!
Wow! Those are wonderful. Thanks for the tips Bryan.
Atlas Obscura reminded me that it's been a *decade* since the Ice Caves on Superior in the Apostle Islands were safe enough to allow visitors.
