Who Am I?
I’m a pro landscape photographer from northern Minnesota. I teach photography workshops. I’m also a freelance writer, a former sea kayaking guide, and I’ve worked in outdoor recreation for over 30 years. I love being in the outdoors and having as many adventures as I can. The ones that I love most are the short ones that I take close to home. I’m lucky because my home is near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
I love photography because it lets me express my love for the outdoors and wild places. Through my images, I try to capture the beauty of our public lands, hoping that the more people see, the more they connect, the more they feel compelled to protect them.
My work appears in national and regional magazines, on book covers, in newspapers, in calendars, in both print and broadcast advertising, on numerous websites, in stores, in galleries, on billboards and on the walls of many homes. Previous publications include Outdoor Photographer, Ocean Paddler, Canoeroots, Adventure Kayak, Canoe and Kayak Magazine, Backpacker Magazine, Sea Kayaker Magazine, Paddler, Paddling Magazine, Lake Superior Magazine, Minnesota Monthly, Superior Outdoors, Silent Sports Magazine, Minnesota Public Radio, National Geographic, National Parks Traveler, Wilderness News, Smoky Mountain Journal of Photography, AAA Living Magazine and many more.
I have a BA in English, and I participated in the Undergrad Fiction Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa.
My website is www.bryanhansel.com.
What is More or Less About the Photo About?
I write about photography, the adventures it leads me on, and whatever else about photography catches my interest. At heart, I’m a guide and instructor, so in my newsletter, I often try to teach something about photography or share what I’ve learned along the way.
This newsletter also includes plenty of photos and the stories behind them. Now and then, I’ll send a personal essay about my adventures, and you can always count on lots of images.
I put my heart into each issue. Photography has given me so much and has enriched my life deeply. I hope that with this newsletter I can give to you some of what photography has given to me.
